there has been very little private investment, especially in industries that were modernized under Soviet-backed rule in the 1980s but then destroyed during years of fighting. A rarely seen snapshot of an everyday Afghan trying to compete in the global economy. We don't hear much about economic development in Afghanistan outside of foreign aid and illegal drugs, so while this piece doesn't really go in depth, it's a welcome read.
