The article looks to the mixed European response to Obama's escalation of Bush's occupation of Afghanistan. Europeans wisely are avoiding driving their tanks into the sandstorm, following decades of horrible US policy in Afghanistan.

I have to wonder if that’s not the same way most Americans would respond if it were up to them.

It is up to us, and I am opposed to military escalation.
