Catholic Church gives D.C. ultimatum on same-sex marriage issue

The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care. A chilling example of why the men who wrote our constitution separated church and state. But not the only recent one. The other is the recent House health care reform bill--where religious beliefs impacted the final bill and the Catholic Church weighed in again too.

Good for councilmember Catania!

“If they find living under our laws so oppressive that they can no longer take city resources, the city will have to find an alternative partner to step in to fill ... More »

A straight forward news report about the Catholic church’s ultimate to the Washington DC Council. The archdiocese’s justification of it’s unchristian attitude and behavior by accusing the council of ignoring the right of religious freedom smacks of Limbaugh, Beck, and the rest of their ilk. But then history has shown Catholicism has usually had to be dragged kicking and screaming into contemporary worlds.

Why do religionists find it so hugely difficult to practice their religions?

Nice to know the Catholic Church is not above black mail when it serves it's purposes.

This article is absolutely quality journalism. It does a fantastic job covering both sides of the argument and features relevant quotations from many sources. Very unbiased writing about an infuriatingly absurd action on behalf of the Archdiocese.

I am sitting here, absolutely appalled that one of the area's primary religious organizations would even suggest the idea of CUTTING support from those in need in order to hinder the rights that the gay community deserves. These 'religious' people would rather cause more hurt to the community in order to uphold their absurd beliefs. This is ridiculous and absolutely childish.
