Insightful commentary about the conflict escalation in Afghanistan, from a longtime observer of the war in Iraq. The author draws parallels between the two conflicts and backs them up with reasonable evidence from diverse sources.

Some of these points are stronger than others, but Cole does successfully critique many aspects of the US engagement in Afghanistan by making a comparison to Iraq.

Cole identifies ten clear aspects in which the illegal Afghanistan military occupation mirrors the socio-military quagmire that is the Iraq illegal invasion/occupation disaster. A clear exposition that the empire has no clothes.

Dosteovsky has Raskolnikov postulate that superior humans have a moral right to kill in the interests of a higher social good. But that rationale has to protect itself behind denial when he murders a pawnbroker. A conscience and a prosecutor have to break down the denial barrier. Perhaps in this article, Cole serves as a prosecutor who can stir the national conscience.

Juan Cole exposes the essential lunacy of American military activities in Afghanistan.

Time for the US to be getting ready to draw down its military forces in Afghanistan. Let Iran, Russia and other countries in the vicinity work out how best to lessen the levels of violence. American military activities cost billions and are counter-productive.
