Why Legalizing Marijuana Makes Sense

Beneath the furious roil of the economic crisis, a national conversation has quietly begun about the irrationality of our drug laws. It is going on in state legislatures, like New York's, where the draconian Rockefeller drug laws are up for review; in other states, from California to Massachusetts, various forms of marijuana decriminalization are being enacted. And it has reached the floor of Congress, where Senators Jim Webb and Arlen Specter have ... Full Story »

Klein makes good use of some humorous verbal images in presenting the story of a movement that is very popular but contrary to years of government demonizing of pot. He over-generalizes that politicians who openly favor non-criminal regulation of pot get ostracized. Several state politicians here have openly worked to that end and have won competitive elections, largely for being honest about the problem.

Economically the proposal made in this article seems (to me) to make sense.

Time publishes an edgy story for once. Overall Klein is insightful and easy to read, despite repeating some well-known arguments for legalization. The baby boomer point is quite the non sequitur.

Klein pokes half-serious fun at our nation's fear of marijuana, along with the maladies of old age. Clever article.

If we legalize pot, what will we do with all the police who have been snooping around looking for pot? Think of the revenue that they could bring in from traffic tickets... and the money saved on jails.

The author touches on most of the best arguments for legalization, while adding his baby boomer spin. Were I a baby boomer, I'm sure this story would be emotionally compelling. As it is, the article is intellectually compelling enough to pass muster.

Unfortunately, the author fails to tie his "dream scenario" in with the basic rights of all United States citizens. For me, this is the most compelling argument for the legalization of marijuana; it is a basic freedom issue. If you want to smoke pot, that's your right. Constitutionally protected. No question. Sale should be regulated and taxed.

Legalizing Marijuana could only make sense if it is legislated with series of conditions and senseful process which could promote responsible use of the substanse. it needs to be practical to manage and monitor. It could be most effective and success ful if it is provided free of charge under specific conditions. this would automaticall take away the exploitation and profiteering of the trading the substanse. The success of the implementation of such regulation will open the door to how the abuse and usage of tobacco and alchahole could also be regulated along the same line at later stage. ali mohsseni

A successful legalized Marijuana use. could provide solution to legalize use of tobacco and even alchahole at later stages of the campaign. one important element of the success would be to provide an administrated free supply of the drug which could take away the trade value of the substance in the market place. ali mohsseni
