Ruby-Sachs provides good insights into the Gay Boycott of funds for the Democratic central committee.

Publicly financed elections would make it easier for diverse and progressive candidates to run effective campaigns. This would reduce the influence of the rich, the corporations, and the money of the central party apparati. Both parties and independents could get better candidates. Redirect funds to publicly funded elections.
