I am tempted to say, somewhat hyperbolically, that virtually the only place in today’s India where Gandhi’s ideas are being duly honored is on the campus of Jamia. But Hasan knows, like Gandhi, and like Martin Luther King, Jr., that anger will not go away, will not cease to create the possibility of violence, unless the subordination that fuels it is brought to an end. Communal dynamics in India are a focus of Nussbaum's research, and this piece is in line with her other work. It makes for a good read, but certainly isn't objective journalism. The information is good, but like her subject, Mushirul Hasan, Nussbaum may be overly invested in a secular mythology of India that's admirable, but may not resonate with everyday Indians today. That being said, this profile is important in surfacing the story of Muslims committed to non-violent co-existence within a pluralistic society.
