Pelosi's damaging competence

Amid the wreckage of Tuesday's GOP rampage, there's one person for whom I feel awful: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She's losing her job not because she does it poorly but because she does it so well.
...Some of the votes she won looked impossible.

Pelosi would never ask for, or even accept, my sympathy - that's not her style. Her place in history was secure the moment she became the first woman to take possession of the speaker's gavel. Still, ... Full Story »

Every once in a while I come across a piece of writing that is just a pleasure to read. Eugene Robinson's piece on Nancy Pelosi is an affectionate tribute to the first woman speaker of the house. It is biased but it is also honest and he makes it clear that he is speaking of Nancy as a person and as someone who is a lot like the rest of us, just ordinary people trying to do the best we can with what we've been given.

I like this particular piece not because I'm a fan of Nancy Pelosi, I really don't have an opinion of her, but because I am a fan of good writing with a sense of moral integrity. I may not like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or Bill O'Reilly but I will extend the courtesy of allowing them to be human and recognize that in spite of our intentions and best efforts we are just like all other humans, flawed.

I regret that the nation has never come to know the actual Nancy Pelosi. Most Americans are probably familiar only with the caricature that her political opponents sketched ... More »

The piece would be better for more examples. I've heard the same thing from people who have an inside perspective on some of the legislative accomplishments in the House. So I know there are more examples than the one he cited.

As for Reid, he's been a bust as majority leader as far as I'm concerned. And I know I'm not alone in that opinion. Democrats would do well to dump him.

It was frustrating to hear Republicans demonize her in their thunderous public statements, then confess privately that they really liked her. More »

This opinion piece has minimal journalistic merit. I give it 5 points for originality! Nobody considers Pelosi a successful speaker. The current and last Congress are generally considered among the worst in recent times, and she bears a significant share of the blame. Her style was dictatorial, refusing to let members see legislation until the votes and excluding the moderate Democrats (who largely were defeated for re-election due to her) from any influence. "We'll have to pass the bill to know what is in it" will be what she is remembered for. And ObamaCare is ranked with the Fugitive Slave Act and Smoot-Hawley Tariff as the worst bills ever passed by Congress; it was largely dictated by her.
