Obama Cap-and-Trade Will Meet Coal-Fired Energy Political Opposition

Bill Galston at the New Republic's blog provides some clear thinking on the prospects for the Obama administration's cap-and-trade legislation. His conclusion: ain't gonna happen. Galston notes that national polls show that on the question of balancing economic against environmental considerations, voters have switched and are now more concerned about the economy—as in holding down utility costs—and less concerned about the environment. Barone gathers some interesting tallys of congress critters and the dirty carbon energy generated from their home states. He completely ignores any moral imperative that might operate to reign in the destruction of the planet. He assumes short term economic interests will continue to destroy the planet based upon what he sees as the short term interests of the critters.

The major danger is all the corporate money available for campaign contributions that help the wishes of Barone come true. The knife stab at William Ayers in the middle of the article shows Barone's personality.

Interesting post by Michael Barone about the political prospects for Obama's proposed cap-and-trade program. The author provides useful factual data to support his point that coal producing states could defeat that legislation. For example, he lists the largest coal producing states along with the number of democratic senators and representatives that might support this legislation for each state. Whether or not you agree with the author, he offers an insightful commentary, based on credible sourcing and helpful context.

this is simply an adjunct to a blog at the new republic (also on newstrust) which lists figures on states' energy sources along with political party numbers to confirm why cap and trade in pres. obama's budget is not feasible based upon congressional votes. unfortunately looking at the figures for states' energy use from coal, this appears to be a rational conclusion.

it is disheartening to look at these figures and understand what they mean politically
