I expect that some middle ground can be found on this issue -- some parts of the Mojave desert may be appropriate for solar energy production, without harming the public interest. I would also like to know the total acreage of available land in California that could be used for solar energy, and how that compares to the 500,000 desert acres being discussed.

I still have questions, but this explains the story fairly well.

This reminds me of Ted Kennedy's efforts to keep wind turbines away from Nantucket.
