NATO and Russia perform an intricate dance

The story seems vague as to what the points are it is trying to make. It makes no significant critique of the efficacy of the missile defense fiascoes nor the mission shift of NATO over the years.

Missile defense will not work reliably against ballistic missiles and not at all against suitcase bombs nor cruise missiles nor drones. Bush used NATO as a format for world domination in an attempt to deny any legitimacy to the United Nations. What the heck is NATO doing in Afghanistan? Surround Russia?

So-so report on NATO/Russian relations. The writer seems to take at face value the assertions of the proponents of the ABM system in Czech Republic and Poland, that it is meant to stop a missile attack from Iran or North Korea. In fact, it is a colossal boondoggle for squandering taxpayer dollars on useless system and demonizing Iran to boot.

Nato needs to think about ending the military mission to Afghanistan, and allowing the Russians Chinese and Iranians to take the lead on working out a solution to the chronic instability (attributable in no small way to the US invasion in 2001). Ukraine and Georgia should not be candidates for Nato membership, at least for the forseeable future.
