This is an important, but tired critique. The historical information is important, but how about bringing some new information to light?

sort of a polemic, preaching to the choir. might be good to prod discussion among groups with diverse or nonexistent views on the question.

the middle class is a relatively recent development in human history, and there is no guarantee it will become a stable feature of society. it may well be that after this brief burst we will relapse into the usual feudal model with an elite and peons and not much in between. assuming the species survives.

What drivel. Despite being accurate in his assessments of the right's shady dealings, the author absolve via omission any responsibility on the part of the Democratic Party.

When it comes to the slow and deliberate destruction of a system of government, it takes a frightening degree of colaboration and/or incompetence amongst all in power.

Quality is low because it does not dive deep enough into factual analysis or informed insight. It is focused on spurring partisan commentary.

This article just scratches the surface of a topic that requires deeper analysis & insight. It also seems more intent on spurring partisan commentary than informed debate, which is unfortunate. Two recent articles that do a much better job of actually shedding light on the concept of the American Dream from a historical, sociological, & economic perspective are: http://josephcari.com/?p=19 http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2009/04/american-dream200904
