Given an annual consumption of 33 billion liters of bottled water in the US, we estimate that the annual consumption of bottled water in the US in 2007 required an energy input equivalent to between 32 and 54 million barrels of oil, or a third of a per cent of total US primary energy consumption. Huang has put together an interesting and unique view of bottled water, taking into account state laws across the nation and the energy consumption and public benefit balance. Respectably short but informative.

Water should remain in the commons, so people have a right to water. Privatization of water is a disaster; other approaches must be applied to address water shortages.
