This long and fact-filled article is mostly made up of information from anonymous sources. It clearly is working from informatin provided by the "U.S. officials" and lacks many important details: which of the US armed services flew the mission? How many were killed in total? The strike, apparently, was in areas not yet well controlled by the interim government and some of the detail sounds hard to obtain. Other points made may be talking points from the briefers. It's hard to tell. The coverage in the Independent includes a few more details and viewpoints (generally a better story) and Al Jazeera, in a shorter article, contains details one might presume the LA Times had access to.
