Is Obama Bringing Too Much Religion into the White House?

Obama is adding religious advisers to the executive branch and kicking off events with prayers vetted by his staff.

"The only thing worse than having these prayers in the first place is to have them vetted, because it entangles the White House in core theological matters," Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU), told Gilgoff. Full Story »

A president whose credentials include being a constitutional scholar seems intent on violating the separation of church and state in some ways that are even worse than W. The article is describes the extent of the malady and provides views of recognized defenders of civil rights and separation of church and state.

There should be a strong wall of separation between the state and any religion. No prayers. No tax dollars. No endorsement. Religious charities by definition proselytize, to pretend otherwise is hypocrisy. Do not officially disrespect Jews, Hindus, Atheists, Muslims, nor followers of our indigenous people.

This is legitimate critcism from the progressive community about an issue that has gained in urgency every year since Ronald Reagan. Segura treats it with the intensity it deserves while showing no trace of anger or frustration. The separation of church and state is as important to democracy as voting rights are.

It's hard to tell what Obama might be up to. My guess is that he wants to lead the world into the next phase of development, and he knows he has to deal with people who actually believe in God. My hope is that he is not afraid of God, so that he can speak to religious people in their own language while making decisions based upon the whole truth as we know it so far. I support Barry Lynn and Americans United for Separation.

Morality has no place in a democracy. Morals are reserved by the Tenth and Eleventh Amendments of the constitution to the people. Obama knows that. Now we know that he knows.
