In the Aftermath of Gaza, Hamas Becomes Harder to Ignore

Of more concern to Israel, perhaps, is the fact that Kerry's visit highlighted the crumbling of the U.S. and Israeli effort to isolate Hamas inside its Gaza ghetto. Not only did the Islamist organization survive the Israeli incursion aimed at smashing its military capability (sporadic rocket fire from Gaza continues even now); it took advantage of the fog of war to mop up what remains of its rival Fatah movement in Gaza. This is a rare, relatively honest story. It doesn't tell the whole story of coarse, but it updates an important part. I think all stories on this topic should begin with the presumption that this conflict is over resources, money, and land. (as all conflicts ultimately are)

Hamas is the only effort with some success in slowing the theft. The Gaza people will support resistance to the theft of their resources, money, and land. The Israelis thought Gazans would plead for an end to resistance by Hamas if they were tortured by brutal war and blockades. The theft could then continue and include the huge gas reserves recently found off Gaza's coast. Well now they have the risk of resistance threatening the project to steal that gas. No one at CNN is ... More »

Butters presents a relatively factual and realistic report of politics among Palestinians. No interviews with AIPAC or their closely linked politicians are included. The article does not mention Hamas claims that Fatah helped the Israelis select targets in Gaza. Such charges may make unity talks futile, and ensure Hamas winning the people.

The official U.S. fiction about Gaza may be slower to change than Time reporting, but good reporting may aid such changes.

This story is biased and without conscious, it is hard to read past the lack of common sense. What authority does Israel have to block pasta from coming into Gaza. Is blocking the border into a sovereign nation a crime? The reporter failed to ask the most basic questions of reportage (5W's) or international law. Is it just a failure of imagination?

Time mag and most media has not thought about law justice or history. The fairy tale the "Emperor's New Cloths" comes to mind

A lightly and minimally sourced story, but has good recent historical information and fairly accurate detail about the developments in in Gaza and the reality's of Hamas. Not a lot of depth but a good overview.

The elephant in the room is Hamas, they connot be trusted in a deal and still have as their mission the eradication of Israel. Until Hamas disavows this mission or the Palestinians develop the courage to vote them out, Palestinians will simply keep dying. The Israelis have shown remarkable restraint, if Hamas possessed Israel's weapons, every Jew in the country would be dead, in prison or gone.

It emphasizes a 'fact on the ground' . It omits, I think, the issue of Fatah's corruption which is also a factor in its losses, and ignores Hamas' 'enforcement' activities. But like and/or agree with it or not, Hamas can't be ignored.

With any luck, diplomats will convince both Israel and Hamas that neither of them can make the other vanish, so they need to accommodate.

Good, straigtforward reporting, on how the foolish US/Israeli effort to isolate Hamas is collapsing, thanks in part to the vicious Israeli rampage in Gaza recently, and to the insane effort to expand the illegal colonies of fanatical Jews splattered all over the West Bank.

Israe, the US and the EU need to accept Hamas as a fact on the ground. Israel has to abandon its idiotic effort to keep the illegal colonies of fanatical Jews splattered all over the West Bank. And get out of the Golan Heights.

This article presents a realistic picture of the political situation in Gaza in a balanced way - surprising for a mainstream publication and much needed. It recognizes the power of Hamas in the region as the governing force, and doesn't fall into the trap of dismissing Hamas as a bunch of out of control terrorists.

Mr Combs--It is chilling the way you refer to the inevitability of Palestinian deaths as if they were being killed by a disease and not as a result of decisions taken by Israeli leaders. As to the trustworthiness of Hamas, the only test of this has been the recent ceasefire, which they adhered to. Israel on the other hand has a decades-long record of not living up to its committments and obligations, both in terms of international law and agreements entered into with Palestinian ... More »

Its sheer bravery in bucking the tide of apologetics for Israel's behavior is in the best traditions of journalism.

My personal view is that Israel started wrong in 1917 and has exhibited historically heralded bad judgment every since. This is just another incident in the long and nasty relations between Zionism and realty, or religion and reality if you wish. The aphorism is choice is: "You always win on your own territory." and I don't mean territory some sky god gave to you, but territory you already live on. We shall see.

If this is quality journalism, then hyenas are vegetarians

Can Israel decimate hamas and Gaza? A foolish question. However, when your sworn enemy is tossing rockets in your backyard, the logical thing to do is to retaliate. Had the western world and the UN.not interferred ,there might have been an end to Hamas. Whether the western countries realized that Israel was doing the free world a favour at its own expense, who knows. But really,if they did not know, then they were simply being coy. Sucking up to terrorists, achieves nothing.
