The Year in Hate

Number of Hate Groups Tops 900

As in recent years, hate groups were animated by the national immigration debate. But two new forces also drove them in 2008: the worsening recession, and Barack Obama's successful campaign to become the nation's first black president. Officials reported that Obama had received more threats than any other presidential candidate in memory, and several white supremacists were arrested for saying they would assassinate him or allegedly plotting to do so. Like cockroches, rats and other vermin, hiding inside sewers and gutters, awaiting the green light of night time signaling commencement of their dirty work, these hate- virused groups need periodic assessment and termination. Articles such as this one espoused by the highly regarded SPLC, seeks to first expose and diagnose the problem, which it does in breathtaking fashion. Anyone not feeling simultaneously both horrified and queasy at their findings is either overly jaded, somewhat sedated or simply attention-deficient. The infestation of hate, (or as Hunter S. Thompsen so aptly put it , pure "fear and loathing,") has not left the building, but is alive and well, if not thriving in parts of "these here United States." Then-Vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin referenced them as "Real Americans," remember? Facists always have and always will hide under the skirts of faux patiotism, just as Nazis and Klansmen have always done. They will paint the Lincolns, Kennedys and Obamas as unpatriotic, but David Duke, George Wallace and Adolph Hitler were somehow heroic, in their sick, distorted world-view. Allowing them freedom of the first amendment is like handing a podium and a bullhorn over to the Columbine Killers, Manson Family or Oklahoma City bombers. Equally reprehensible was Look Magazine paying Emmett Till's murderers $2000 for their confession while nothing happened to them. In 2009, this story is more than a cautionary tale; it is a warning siren and an urgent cry for help. The FBI needs to roll up its collective sleeves and dig out every last weedy remnant of these social parasites. Children in our schools need mandatory hate group education, even if it counters their own parents' philosophy. The article was not only informative, it was a PSA!
