The Year in Hate

Number of Hate Groups Tops 900

As in recent years, hate groups were animated by the national immigration debate. But two new forces also drove them in 2008: the worsening recession, and Barack Obama's successful campaign to become the nation's first black president. Officials reported that Obama had received more threats than any other presidential candidate in memory, and several white supremacists were arrested for saying they would assassinate him or allegedly plotting to do so. The bottom half of this report contains the best information -- a thoroughly documented and well sourced summary of the three most active hate groups in the country. The opening paragraphs left me with one question: Is it that more hate groups are being formed, or that law enforcement is recognizing and rooting out more hate groups that already exist?

Somewhat surprisingly, it wasn’t just the usual suspects from the white supremacist underworld who sought to exploit the country’s economic turmoil and ... More »

I love how this article breaks down--organization by organization--all the hate groups that reared their ugly heads within the past year.

Will the election of Barack Obama quiet these organizations--or exacerbate them? Stay tuned!

This is a list of extreme right organizations. It would be a better article if it provided more information about these organizations. I understand that these groups try hard to stay below the radar, but it is important to know more about all these groups.

Lots of links to information about groups I wish didn't exist.

A more powerful reason for people of good conscience to work with those of different backgrounds is hard to imagine.

As an intelligence report it is hard to find fault. Behind the report is a courageous reporter and behind him, the courageous defenders of human rights, including the officials of the SPLC. It shouldn't be surprising that there are hate groups in the world, given the fact that the world itself is a vicious place. The surprising thing is that there are so many people who are struggling to establish a new kind of world in which terror, hatred, and viciousness have all but died out. The only way this could possibly be done is for those who hope for that kind of world to face the danger, experience the terror, and feed the "good wolves" of our nature by supporting groups like the SPLC. This report and the illustration that goes ... More »

The article informs of hate groups around the country, showing they are a clear and present danger.

The story reads like whack a mole. Sue them and convict them one place, and they pop up in another. The story motivates a continued need for whacking.

While not being sourced except for figures provided by the the author, and no law enforcement quotes, I believe this may be a problem. I talked last week about homegrown terrorism, and the figures don't lie. Another McVeigh could be right around the corner.

While I'm sure the Secret Service has it under control, if Obama was ever assassinated this country would spiral out of control.

These groups are extremely toothless and of no importance except to provide evidence that racism is a big influence in the USA.

Like cockroches, rats and other vermin, hiding inside sewers and gutters, awaiting the green light of night time signaling commencement of their dirty work, these hate- virused groups need periodic assessment and termination. Articles such as this one espoused by the highly regarded SPLC, seeks to first expose and diagnose the problem, which it does in breathtaking fashion. Anyone not feeling simultaneously both horrified and queasy at their findings is either overly jaded, somewhat sedated or simply attention-deficient. The infestation of hate, (or as Hunter S. Thompsen so aptly put it , pure "fear and loathing,") has not left the building, but is alive and well, if not thriving in parts of "these here United States." ... More »

These trends are important to not only note but pass on..hatred =violence and injustice..these groups are domestic terrorist groups and treasonous inciting colluding to murder our much beloved president and our citizens is more than vastly disturbing-it's criminal. One need only look at the watermelon patch on the white house lawn and dead chimp jokes to understand how culturally pervasive racism really is. Xenophobia/Racism is our nation's true pass time and the source of all our ... More »
