National NAACP urges opposition to Prop 8

Organizations encourages lawmakers to vote for resolutions against amendment

In a letter to legislative leaders, NAACP national board chair Julian Bond and President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous urged lawmakers to pass House Resolution 5 and Senate Resolution 7 and put the legislature on record as calling for the courts to invalidate Prop 8 as an “improper and dangerous alteration of the California Constitution.”

Basic reporting, but a significant story. I wish it had more provided more context on the civil liberty issue of gay rights and the divisions within the African-American community over this issue.

One not familiar with the history of the human rights movement, and the gay rights efforts within that movement, might immediately expect that the African-American community to be a consistent ally of the GLBT community. My personal experience has not shown this to be the case. Several years ago I invited a black gay friend to volunteer for a local GLBT political group. It's nice to see the NAACP stepping up to address GLBT civil rights, a cause not always popular with the general African-American community.
