The Other Black President

The NAACP confronts a new political -- and racial -- era.

Jealous is part community organizer, part savvy financial operator, and part tech geek. In less than a year as president, he has made converts out of his critics both within the NAACP and outside it, and he has modernized the organization by drawing young, gifted and black talent. In advance of the presidential election, Jealous developed a new online system to help the NAACP register thousands of voters. And he has used his fundraising connections to ... Full Story »

An almost unusually good story from the American Prospect on the NAACP's young new president. The portrayal of Jealous is too glowing for this to be wholly effective, but overall it's a substantive and well contextualized profile.

On the eve of its centennial year, the organization risks becoming a victim of its own success. The leader of the Western world is a black man named Barack Obama, and even ... More »

An in-depth profile of the new NAACP president, and a hostry of the organization itself. This highly informative piece only loses significant points for perhaps not painting a more even-handed protrait of Ben Jealous -- surely someone who has risen so quickly has received substantive criticism.

While the NAACP has been almost irrelevant in the last decade, Mr. Serwer's article on Ben Jealous seems to say it's not dead yet. With this well sourced article on the past and into the future, it seems Mr.Jealous may make an important contribution to the civil rights movement.

I like the idea that Mr. Jealous doesn't just put Blacks in the movement, but other minorities as well.

A superb look at the NAACP, the new direction of a real leader in the black community, Adam Serwer did a nearly perfect job here, tight, well organized, factual and great historical sourcing. An excellent read from start to finish.

The only shortcoming was perhaps the writer failed to mention how black history will view Mr. Obama's racial contribution as a true bi-racial leader. The fact that Obama is half black and was raised nearly fully outside the Black Experience might help people see that a cultural filter is all that separates us in the end.

A very well written thorough analysis of the NAACP. The author takes adequate time to relay the organization’s history, its challenges, and introduce the new NAACP president Ben Jealous. The article gives significant insight into the life and background of Jealous and is a terrific read.

Sound reporting. An informative profile of Ben Jealous. The profile is particularly good at using Jealous to situate the NAACP in a 21st Century context.

I would have liked to have seen some sources who were closer to Jealous personally and professionally, but there is a lot to learn about the man in this piece.

I think that this is certainly quality journalism, as long as one keeps in mind the mission of The American Prospect. They are concerned with a just society, as am I, but I think often the stories are coming from a more liberal perspective. So long as you know the mission of the publication before you read the story, I think this can be considered to be good, factual journalism. It just has a certain perspective, it would not be considered 'neutral.'

I liked this article because not only did I learn a lot about the new president of the NAACP, but it touched on the fact that we don't hear a lot from the NAACP as an organization anymore. And I agree with the writer in that even though people may think the organization is out of touch, or a 'relic,' there is still so much to be accomplished in the way of African American rights. I am currently doing a project focusing on criminal justice, and I thought it was good how he pointed ... More »

I would call this good journalism but not quality journalism. There were a few biases the author made about Jealous being a tech geek and some of the quotes used seemed more humorous, rather than factual. However, it did present all the facts regarding the iissue of the new NAACP president.

I liked this article because it gave me some news that I likely would have missed. I had no idea what a big deal it was for the new election of the NAACP president. I didn't even know that the last president embarrassed the entire NAACP. This article made me realize that there is so much else going on in the U.S. and the world. Sadly, mainstream media focuses on one group and it is hard to get news from different organizations and social groups. The media has to and will change ... More »

While the publication is very informative. It does seem to have an opinion overshadowing it. It is definitely seeking the sympathy of readers for the NAACP organization, which I don't think is a bad thing, but an opinion nonetheless.

Background contextual-references are provided for each expressed opinion. Journalism's 101 basic questions are answered. Reporter's brief profile for follow up inquiry is provided.

I am aware of the complex sophistication of maneuvering the racist system's post-colonial through ever-present overcoming that we multi-generations for whom human rights is a convicted effort must slog. This critical analysis as a pivotal example of this young century's birthing new paradigm leadership along this journey, is just the kind if thing to which I hoped my recently created NewsTrust account might lead. Thank you.
