One of the reasons that there is so much interest among African Americans in the type of DNA tests mentioned in this article is that the reporter often covers a famous African American person (in this case, Isaiah Washington) who takes a DNA test to find out which African nation his/her ancestors inhabited. The problem with this article and with others is that very little care is given in explaining that the DNA results are not necessarily accurate. Just one paragraph out of this 41-paragraph article mentions that the test results might not be accurate. From Los Angeles Times "Called back to Africa by DNA": "He argues, however, that the global database of African genetic profiles is too small to be able to pinpoint the exact country of origin. Rick Kittles, African Ancestry's scientific director and University of Chicago associate professor of medicine, counters that his proprietary database is large enough for accurate testing." While it is fine to report on the phenomenon of African Americans attempting to reconstruct their identities through DNA tests, the article must better explain just how controversial these tests are and how much debate there is around them.
