A well sourced but under-researched reaction story on AG Eric Holder's "nation of cowards" remarks. The Chronicle elicited some insightful responses in this piece -- although I saw no need to quote Rush Limbaugh -- but could have offered more analysis to complement them.

Presents the perspectives of both civil rights leaders amd those not interested in talking about race, regarding Holder's comments, and the overall shift in the Justice department. Weak on evidentiary data.

Sound article reflecting opposing opinions of the state of the nation's ability to discuss and deal candidly with issues of race in the USA, particularly within the legal system. I do think the headline is misleading, and disproportionate to the content of the article: Holder is actually facing racial issues...not putting "race high on (his) agenda."

It is impossible to look at today's news and claim that issues of racial inequality are NOT rife in the legal system. Consider the radically different cases of Troy Davis and Bernie Madoff. Davis, who has been imprisoned for more than 19 years on a highly questionable conviction, continues to face execution by the State of Georgia. Despite overwhelming international efforts to hold a new trial, the State of Georgia refuses to reconsider new exculpitory evidence. Mr. Davis, a ... More »

Holder, the nation’s first African American attorney general, made the statement at a Department of Justice celebration of Black History Month. He urged people ... More »

A nice overall report on the ramifications of Holder's speech and the "nation of cowards"statement. While the author could have went all day and not mentioned "Rush",most people know what he meant by saying it.

Holder does have a point in saying that most people hang out with the people of the same race. But if Blacks like Hip-Hop, southerners like country, and old hippies like me like classic Rock, it makes for a weird party.

A worthwhile read, if nothing else it puts into context Holder's comments. Offers predictable quotes from the NAACP, Limbaugh and Project 21 but little else. Reiterates a quick, but nothing new, look back at racial history in the U.S.. Still worth reading. Not an ambitious article but ok. Thoughts from other administration officials would have been interesting.

Holders approach I think was intentionally "ham handed" to get attention and to stimulate the very conversation he thinks should be continued. His strong wording make it impossible to think otherwise. I am surprised he has yet to make an issue over the lack of people of color in the new administration? I suspect it will never happen.."walking the talk"..is always hard.

It's not at all clear what Holder is talking about. Is he talking about the culture of single mothers and black male crime gone wild or is he talking about white racism oppressing blacks?

I'm not a coward on this subject. Blacks should stop complaining about racism, stop demanding special consideration, and start fixing their own problems.

It is because it is bringing up a controversial issue that does need to be addressed. The fact that this reporter tried to address it is something to acknowlwedge. But they definitely presented all the african american people as angray and only concerned with race issue. they alos put all teh responsibility onto Obama's shoulders which isnt a fair representation.
