State of War

Mexico’s hillbilly drug smugglers have morphed into a raging insurgency. Violence claimed more lives there last year alone than all the Americans killed in the war in Iraq. And there’s no end in sight.

I’ve traveled through most of Mexico’s 31 states. I’ve written two books about the country. And yet I now struggle to recognize the place. Mexico is wracked by a criminal-capitalist insurgency. This is a well written piece about an issue so many Americans have so little knowledge of despite our role in the grand scheme of it all, not to mention the proximity of the violence. If Sam Quinones wasn't working as a reporter for the LA Times, I think more sources would be necessary to make it reliable.
