State of War

Mexico’s hillbilly drug smugglers have morphed into a raging insurgency. Violence claimed more lives there last year alone than all the Americans killed in the war in Iraq. And there’s no end in sight.

I’ve traveled through most of Mexico’s 31 states. I’ve written two books about the country. And yet I now struggle to recognize the place. Mexico is wracked by a criminal-capitalist insurgency. I have read and seen stories that make it seem that a war is going on just over our southern border. This article lends a lot of credibility to that idea. The question that is left that this story does not address is: is Mexico in danger of becoming a failed/narco state?
