The article brings together science and questions of the environment and climate change. Relatively few people recognize the widespread destruction incurred by mining and refining oil shales. Hansen frames it as a critical moment in the history of our planet, as Obama heads to Canada.

We need to speed up carbon free renewable energy resources and limit our population growth as we learn to conserve energy.
