American Roulette

In our winner-take-all casino economy, the middle class is getting royally screwed. A call to arms for populism, before it's too late.

I know capitalism is all about creative destruction, that the pain of globalization must be endured and flexible labor markets are good; inequality is endemic; life is uncertain and unfair, sure, yeah, of course. We're all Reaganites now--or at least no longer socialists by instinct. This is a breezily written opinion piece urging populism to reverse our slide into a banana-republic-like distribution of wealth. It cites few facts, is poorly sourced and makes little attempt at balance -- but it isn't too nasty and is easy and fun to read. It is unlikely, however, to change any minds.

Clearly an op-ed opinion piece with more than glancing references to core arguments from the other side of the discussion. The bias is strong and the counterbalancing detail thin but the logic is clear and reasonable. Even if you disagree, it raises points that aren't trivial and need some consideration.

NewsTrust is dedicated to the idea that good journalism is "fair" and even more than that, "balanced." The Idea of Social responsibility has been abdicated by the ruling classes. There should be sense of, if not duty, loyalty to the workers who put the nuts and bolts together for an entrepreneurs dream. It's sad, and maybe premature, but the ultimate "populism" is an economically disenfranchised, perhaps hungry, population knowing where the gated communitys are. And frustrated, simply going there in huge numbers to take back their share.
