Franken-Coleman trial: Really, no kidding, Thursday is going to be a critical day

Here’s the tally in legal briefs both sides filed late today. Tuesday the judges asked the two campaigns their opinions on whether 19 discrete and some even esoteric categories of ballots should be counted.

From signatures, to date of arrival, to the legality of witnesses, to wrong addresses...lots of little, itty-bitty things that, it seems, the law requires.

This is a little entertaining, and it gives a pretty good snapshot of where this case stands. Not much historical context, but that may be intentional, to avoid annoying MN readers who are tired of this unfinished election.

The fact that elections can be so close, and also are potentially wrongly decided by judges, helps make the case for adopting more modern vote counting methods such as instant runoff, which would expand the margin of victory. But it also suggests that more election reforms should be adopted, even ones that may have only small effects on the vote, such as photo IDs.

Deals fairly concisely with a confusing subject. Perhaps a touch too flip though.

There ought to be a faster process to finalize a result. Important events are happening in DC and Minnesota is under represented.
