Republicans See Long-Term Victory in Defeat on Stimulus Plan

Three months after their Election Day drubbing, Republican leaders see glimmers of rebirth in the party's liberation from an unpopular president, its selection of its first African American chairman and, most of all, its stand against a stimulus package that they are increasingly confident will provide little economic jolt but will pay off politically for those who oppose it. Impressive sourcing went into this story to show the fragile unity and new sense of self the Republicans have achieved in their opposition to Obama's stimulus bill. Quotes are generally better than the Beltway jargon that papers are forced to run when there's a showdown at the Capitol like this. Page two is probably too dense for some, but this was an interesting and convincing piece.

WaPo reporters interview cross sample of prominent Republicans in a look at how posturing over the Stimulus plan fits into a larger political strategy for the weakened party.

The story provides insightful snatches of what passes for thought in the Republican world.

No is not a policy. It is a two-year old. Hypocrisy is rampant with Republicans posturing for fiscal restraint after wildly unrestrained spending for Bush and his "off the budget" war debacles. They seem to want a spectacular depression in order to hope that will get them back in power. The only people they care about is themselves.

This gives divergent views and needed analysis. I think it is fair to all sides yet helps intelligent readers draw their own conclusions.

Triumphalist Republicans may be happy to read this piece. It amused me. GOP talking about principles? Jack Abramoff will giggle if the WAPO is delivered to his jail cell. One other thing. It will take much more than giving voice to a tiny handful of blacks to break the party out of its old white male demographic.

A well sourced and well developed article about the Republican Party's hopeful emergence from the shadow of Mr. Bush. The writer did a great job weaving together some of the players including the bombastic Rush. The upshot of the article is the Republicans feel the party's future is solely dependant on the failure of the Democrates to fix a bipartisian mess.

The GOP would do well to toss Limbaugh off the first cliff it finds but won't as they are spineless. The Dem's will only have to remind America of Mr. Limbaugh' "infidus" when he admitted he lied regarding his support for Mr. Bush for years. The reality is no Bailouts have EVER worked, the GOP should not put one forward or support one. Let Mr. Obama sink his own ship and vote no, he is sadly, I think, very much over his head in under three weeks.

A very well written story with plenty of Republicans shooting their self in the foot. These Idiots who put that goose-egg on the Presidents test don't realize that they won a battle, not the war. The American people could give a damn about politics. They want to pay their bills, put food on their table and live a good life. Party now, the hangover's coming.

If Obama keeps going around the country like he did today and looking as good as he did today, I would't want to be a Rush Congressman on the next election.
