Journalism Education's Broader, Deeper Mission

Accepting an award from Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School for Journalism & Mass Communication several months ago, former PBS NewsHour host Robert McNeil called journalism education probably "the best general education that an American citizen can get" today.

As a member of the NewsTrust community, I can attest to the value of the the author's recommendations. The goals seem somewhat lofty, literally requiring a paradigm shift in our culture to value critical thinking - but he offers practical suggestions that if adopted even in part should move us in the right direction.
