Journalism Education's Broader, Deeper Mission

Accepting an award from Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School for Journalism & Mass Communication several months ago, former PBS NewsHour host Robert McNeil called journalism education probably "the best general education that an American citizen can get" today.

Insightful recommendation that journalism schools take on a broader mission: to help people navigate and manage the myriad information streams of a media-saturated world. The author presents a reasonable argument for the unique role journalism schools can play in media education for all citizens, citing authoritative sources and concrete examples of how this could come about. Invaluable and constructive commentary about an important but under-reported issue.
