The proposed cuts, by various accounts, include $40 billion to help states (in large part with education budgets), possibly $14 billion for Pell grants, and $14 billion for other education programs (though late word ... Full Story »

some very good points are made here about cutting education plans from the stimulus package, including the importance of giving money to states, and the economic stimulus ed. money will provide. keeping jobs clearly is as important as creating jobs, tho many in congress apparently see only private sector jobs as real ones.

While I don't find myself in agreement with Mr. Kristof often, he and his friends at Post are right about education being a high priority. While it won't put money in people's pockets the next day, some of this stimulus has to be long-term.

I can't see why the Republicans keep banging their heads against the wall about tax cuts. You have two wars going on at the same time, your in a recession, where in God's name are you getting the money to pay for this and cut taxes at the same time. Reality Time!

Are they proud that we have close to 50 MILLION Americans without health care, and untold young people who cannot currently find a job NOR do they have money for school! Since the tie between lack of literacy and jail inmates has been proven, would they rather just build more JAILS? Pay now or pay later. What a waste.
