States the somewhat obvious: the Obama administration's rocky relationship with Kabul will carry on, with a significant glitch in the White House's plans to unveil a new strategy. This story is U.S.-centered, focusing more on how the election will affect policy from Washington than issues on the ground in Afghanistan. A worthwhile read.

His acceptance of a runoff, administration officials say, was far more important in ensuring the legitimacy of the election process than Abdullah’s participation in it. Abdullah trailed Karzai by double digits after the first round even after Karzai was stripped of the fraudulent votes.
