Hedges provides a scenario that is definitely not the rosy positive spin that the current economic problems are cyclical and that Obama will save us. He channels others that fear the rise of a totalitarian right in America unless there is structural change, as opposed to atmospherics. This is good reading for an expanded view.

I think Hedges presents a real threat here. The questions are whether we can change in good directions fast enough to restore our society.

“My greatest fear is that the Obama administration will achieve relatively little in terms of structural change,” he added. “They may at best keep the system going. But there is a growing pessimism.
