The whole reason we've got minimum wage law and other labor laws is that left to their own designs businesses colluded with each other, fixed their prices, and paid their workers next to nothing in horrible life-threatening conditions (and some of those laborers were children).

It's barely journalism at all. The story implies that poor people are paid the minimum wage. But I think most poor people, if earning at all, are in work not covered by the minimum wage, such as off-the-books labour, or self-employed. Also, the facts about Nardelli's compensation and how Home Depot workers are treated have been widely reported. Nothing new here.
