U.S. Bars Lab From Testing Electronic Voting

A laboratory that has tested most of the nation's electronic voting systems has been temporarily barred from approving new machines after federal officials found that it was not following its quality-control procedures and could not document that it was conducting all the required tests. This article doesn't really describe the issues - what are the challenges of testing voting machines? What are the areas of potential errors? What is required to establish the level of trust that the public (and the law) demands? How can the public be assured that this technology is better than what we have now?
