altho rambling in time and place and perhaps too autobiographical, this lengthy article is filled with afghanistan's modern history brought to life by the author's personal involvement in the political life of many afghanis still creating afghanistan's furture history. it is fascinating and tells of tmuch of the violence which is such a part of the political life of the country.

only the asia society preview led me to read this story as i have been there. it saddens me that in this country we know and care so little about other places than the west. and now we are emboldened to attempt remaking them in our own image.

Outstanding and astonishing historical account of Afghan history, woven backwards and forward, and giving sound reasons for thinking Obama had better reflect carefully before he sends another 30,000 US soldiers and marines to the place. The author thinks it is years too late to seek a military solution to the instability that plagues the country.

I agree with Zbigniew Brzezinski and Andrew Bacevich that there seems to be no military solution to the Afghan insurgency. This is also the view of Russia and Iran.

Am historical trip down memory lane. Unfortunately I only go back to the Soviet Union, but this was a fascinating story which goes to prove, that Afgha.,will be a mess for another hundred years.

While I hope we are drawing down from Iraq, If we'er just going to re-train these soldier's and send them back to Afgha., what have we accomplished.
