Palestine: Assessing the Aftermath in Gaza
On Sunday evening the Israel Defense Forces began a troop withdrawal from Gaza, following three straight weeks of attacks. Israel's unilateral ceasefire was announced earlier in the day, and met with an offer for a one-week ceasefire from Hamas, the full text of which is here. I agree with Bashar al-Assad that Hamas is a necessary party to a settlement of the Palestine/Israel problem, and that Hamas would accept Israel within its pre-1967 borders. This frenzy of death and destruction has done more damage than good to Israel.
