Hamas announces ceasefire in Gaza

The Palestinian militant group Hamas has announced an immediate ceasefire with Israel in Gaza.

A statement read by a Hamas spokesman said the group would hold fire for a week to give Israel time to withdraw its forces from the Gaza Strip.

Decent first-report-under-cease-fire, gives a general summary of the political chess game, brief descriptions of some of the damage, casual mention of the uneven death ratio of 100 Palestinians per Israeli killed. The video was more indicative of the damage to buildings and infrastructure, but both fall short of capturing the imbalance between the IDF military's virtually unopposed assault and 1.5 million primarily unarmed and defenseless Palestinian civilians.

In order to get a more informative picture of the facts of life--and death--for Palestinians in Gaza, you must read the story linked to this piece, about a young Palestinian teen, Amira al-Girim, whose life and future will never be the same.

Hamas officials stopped the BBC from filming at one site where bodies were still being removed – a sign, perhaps, that there had been some kind of military target nearby, our correspondent says.

So, is body removal ALWAYS a sign that there PERHAPS was a sign of “some kind of military target nearby”? Might the officials have stopped filming to spare survivors the horror of seeing their dead loved ones on TV?

Hamas’ deputy chief in Syria, Moussa Abou Marzouk, said the ceasefire was in the name of all “Palestinian resistance factions”. “We… announce a ceasefire of our factions in the Gaza Strip and we stress that our demand is the withdrawal of the enemy forces from the Gaza Strip within a week, along with the opening of all the crossings for the entry of humanitarian aid, food and other necessities for our people in the Gaza Strip.”

The best way to eliminate smuggling through tunnels to Egypt is to open the border crossings into Israel and restore humanitarian aid, food, and the other necessities for basic sustenance of life and fundamental human rights for Palestinians in Gaza.

I chafe at the persistent use of language that paints “Palestinian militant group Hamas,” while all other groups mentioned were not dubbed “militant.”
