It's time for the U.N. to impose tough sanctions on Israel
It's time for the United Nations to shed its impotency and impose tough sanctions on Israel. That would be the least the United Nations could do after sitting silently for years through a "peace process" that Israel has used as a cover to grab Palestinian land. Full Story »

Sir, While you are entitled to have, and to air your views, and it is perfectly clear where your sympathies lie, it is not your right to promulgate lies, unchallenged. Most egregious is that "When Israel took Gaza in 1967, in a clear act of aggression..." Israel, as you certainly know, was attacked when Egypt threw out the U.N. buffer forces from Sinai, closed the Straits of Tiran to Israel, (a clear and recognized causus belli) and massed its troops on the Sinai border and in Gaza, from where they attacked southern Israel, while Jordan and Syria attacked from the north and east, again with the clearly voiced aim of "throwing the Jews into the sea." The second "inaccuracy" is that Hamas rockets were a RESPONSE to Israel's embargo. Rockets have targeted Israeli civilians from Gaza since the start of the 2nd Intifada in 2000. More than 8000 of them. The rockets flew after Israel left Gaza in 2005, when Gazans were left to their own resources to establish the beginnings of the Palestinian state they claim to want. Instead they destroyed the infrastructure Israel left them, and elected a government sworn to Israel's destruction, and the extermination of her people. As the rockets continued to be launched (read the media reports!!!) Israel instituted the closure. The third is your claim of "the ethnic cleansing of Palestine by Israel in 1948." You would then have to explain the 21% of Israel's total population which the Arabs today comprise. In contrast, how many Jews were left in the eastern part of the British Mandate of Palestine, (Jordan and the West Bank,) and in the eastern parts of the city of Jerusalem (where the Jewish population comprised the majority since the 19th century) after 1948? Ethnic cleansing, indeed! If, as I suspect, you are among those who would deny the Jewish people, (and ONLY the Jewish people) the right to re-establish a secure, democratic nation in a small part of its ancient homeland, there really is nothing to discuss, or debate. Israel, in your eyes will be wrong regardless of its actions. (e.g. Israel warned Hamas for weeks that it would be forced to respond if the rockets did not stop. Hamas chose to ignore the warnings. If Israel had responded in the dead of night - you would have claimed perfidy. As Israel attacked at mid-day, that was not acceptable to you either.) Be aware, however, that Israel will not "go quietly into that dark night". And you, and the "peace activists", and the rest of the "United Nations" that have acted with such single-minded malice that left Israel no choice, bear major responsibility for the carnage resulting from Israel's struggle to survive. If, on the other hand, I have misjudged, then, in all fairness, please propose a course that Israel might follow, (what it SHOULD do, not what it SHOULD NOT do,) when it is faced with countries and armed factions that do not want peace, under any circumstances that entail the survival of a Jewish state; that are prepared to die and to see their fellow Arabs die in pursuit of that maximalist goal; that believe that time is on their side, and are willing to bear the cost, as long as it takes; that have no compunction against breaking every moral and legal law by using (willing?) women and children as human shields, and hiding themselves and their arms caches in homes, schools, hospitals, and mosques.
