The six month truce between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip mediated by Egypt ended on December 19. Following the end of that ceasefire, tensions and violence escalated between Israel and Hamas. On December 27, airstrikes by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) hit over 40 Hamas targets in Gaza.
