By all rights, America’s dilapidated rail lines ought to be a prime candidate for some of that spending. All over the country there are opportunities like the I-81/Crescent Corridor deal, in which relatively modest amounts of capital could unclog massive traffic bottlenecks, revving up the economy while saving energy and lives. I’ve traveled on European railroads so modern that when 190 MPH trains passed through high-banked curves, pivoting coaches remained level with no feeling of speed nor any discomfort. One interesting trip involved driving the rental car onto a train and remaining in it while we sped through a tunnel under the Alps. Instead of 8 grueling hours on dangerous, snowy high mountain passes, it took 20 minutes.
