Israel's Gaza offensive stokes anger among Jordan elite

Public protests against Israel have grown larger, and officials of the staunch U.S. ally have strongly criticized the Jewish state and begun to hedge their bets diplomatically.

From King Abdullah II on down, Jordanians, more than half of them of Palestinian descent, widely fear that instead of reaping long-term rewards for helping stabilize Iraq and counter Iran's regional aspirations, their country will be forced to deal with shattered hopes for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process it has supported for more than a decade. The reporter took great initiative in this story, identifying a real trend in condemnation of Israel among the Jordanian political- and upper-class. Well supported with sources and background information on Jordan's diplomatic relationship with Israel and Palestinian groups. Adds a very important layer to our understanding of the conflict.

Anger among the Jordanian elite at Israel's vicious attacks on Gaza is inevitable. The article does not mention that Qatar is friendly toward the US, Israel and Iran, though the current onslaught in Gaza is not doing relations with the US and Israel much good.

The King of Jordan decried Israeli war crimes in Gaza, from the start. Bush administration complicity in the murderous stupidity of the Israelis is beneaqth contempt.

While I disapprove of Israel killing women and children in Gaza, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
