Speaking with judgment, not prejudice

YET another bloodbath in Gaza, and yet more upset sighs from Malaysians. Into the third week of fighting, the figures are, once again, excruciating -- more than 900 people killed on the Palestinian side, and 13 Israelis.

It is not just Malaysian Muslims who are outraged; the injustice is felt by all. Funds for Gaza have seen contributions from the Chinese and Sikh communities; members of parliament from both the government and opposition have debated the conflict.

There is a shared frustration over the plight of the Palestinians who have suffered under Israeli occupation and a debilitating economic blockade.

Wisdom from Malyasia, advocating the importance of concise analytical thought and precision of speech when discussing the Israeli bombardment of Gaza. Chin tells a personal story of unintentionally hurting a friend by an inadvertently negative comment. In the case of the Israeli government action against Gaza, Chin urges readers to clearly differentiate between acts by individuals or governments, e.g. "Israeli government" instead of "Jews," and "terrorist acts" instead of "Muslims."

I fear that the most catastrophic external consequence of the Israeli government's assault on Palestinians in Gaza will be a rise in anti-Semitism and anti-Islamic violence. an important reminder made in a reflective personalized story which illustrates very well the thought process for the vital necessity of making distinctions between those whose actions we condemn and those we may thoughtlessly treat as if they are the same because they share the larger category which contains them all. illustrates in current events how commonly easy it is to fall into this .
