Bush reviews unfinished business and his legacy

Every president leaves unfinished business. For George W. Bush, the list includes two wars and the war on terror, saving Social Security, establishing an enduring Republican majority, and much, much more.

In some cases, like immigration reform, he concedes tactical miscalculations. Mostly, though, Bush maintains that he did his best and did the right thing, even when it cost him.

This is a well-written piece, with good turns of phrases and an intensive attention to local people who went to Washington with Bush or served under him there. It was localized quite nicely and kep the reader's attention.

The article is folksy and shallow. There is a lot of quotes of Bush's weak self justifictitions of reasons for things going wrong.

Another DMN softball, while is is somewhat tougher on Bush, it still allows him to state outright lies without challenging him. In 2000 he campained as the person best able to lead in a wartime situation, yet he claims the opposite.

Sometimes journalists can be too balanced.

Legacies are written in results. And the results of this man's 8-year tenure in the White House are obvious, legion and horrific. There are times when the basically sound journalistic rule of fairness and balance are defeated by the lopsided realities on the ground. The end of the Bush term is one of those times. If a reporter reports this story with 100% fairness and accuracy the resulting article would read more like an indictment than a news story... as it should
