Bill Moyers reflects on Middle East violence

In a city made noisy by hammers and saws preparing for the inauguration of a new president — a city already reverberating with partisan rancor, and with the constant chattering of the opinionated — it was hard to hear the sound of a single snare drum along Pennsylvania Avenue, between the White House and Capitol Hill, but there it was: a mere handful of men and women, 70 at most, had come out this rain-swept morning to bear witness to the dead - to the ... Insightful commentary on the violence in Gaza and the tragedy of state terrorism by countries like Israel and Hamas. Bill Moyers argues that "brute force can turn self-defense into state terrorism" and condemns Israel for its irresponsible behavior in recent weeks. He also points to an under-reported protest in Washington DC, which was largely ignored by the American news media, to express concerns about media apathy regarding this tragedy: "Rarely does our mainstream media depart from the monotonous monologue of the party line." A thoughtful and comprehensive perspective on this tragedy.

Bill Moyers articulates very well my own views on this deeply disturbing and complex issue.

Brute force can turn self-defense into state terrorism. It’s what the US did in Vietnam with B52s and napalm, and again in Iraq with shock and awe. … By killing ... More »

Moyers speaks courageously and forcefully against the mainstream Washington position of unquestioning Congressional support for the Israeli military assault on Gaza.

This act of courage has high costs: just look at the comments posted to the site's blog. But Moyers' bone-deep grounding in theology, his experience in the political realm, and his lifetime of commitment to the highest integrity in journalism combine to make this a profoundly moving commentary on perhaps the most urgent issue facing the Obama administration--and the collective conscience of America.

For too much of the world at large the names of the dead and wounded in Gaza might as well be John Doe too. They are the casualties and victims of Israel’s decision ... More »

Nobody does it better than Bill Moyers. There is no rational way to argue against this presentation. It is a picture of reorganized reality for purposes of education. Each piece stands on its own and fits into the picture perfectly. It is discouraging that the Israeli confidence that the MSM in America would not examine or condemn the Gaza crimes because they would be so absorbed in the glitz and glamor of the inauguration. The slaughter in Gaza is justified only in the sense that history is full of examples where slaughter actually does solve the problem. It is not justified by the growing consciousness of the the human mind, nor will it be condoned by the ever-developing human conscience, both of for which Bill Moyers speaks.
