Church of Scientology Convicted of Fraud in France

The court convicted the Church of Scientology's French office, its library and six of its leaders of organized fraud. Investigators said the group pressured members into paying large sums of money for questionable financial gain and used ''commercial harassment'' against recruits. Full Story »

I read the story first in The Independent this morning. But there it was linked to another recent story about a high-profile defection (which I've linked here). This provided more context. Neither original article digs very far into the decades-long controversy into the group, or the actions taken in other countries.

The story and allegations are absolutely true. I know this because I am a former member who was kicked out for asking uncomfortable questions like, "If you can control matter and energy as you claim to be able to teach me, why do you need so much of my money?" Unfortunately, like the French woman who brought suit, I asked too late. They'd already swindled my ex-husband out of most of what we had. More details on the charges from all plaintives would fill out the story. This is a good first report on the verdict.

The state department should not be preaching to other nations in the defense of freaky "religions" where "con" is the operative syllable in congregation.
