Israel demolishes Hamas compounds, over 200 dead

Israeli warplanes retaliating for rocket fire from the Gaza Strip pounded dozens of security compounds across the Hamas-ruled territory in unprecedented waves of airstrikes Saturday, killing more than 200 people and wounding nearly 400 in the single bloodiest day of fighting in years.

Most of those killed were security men, but an unknown number of civilians were also among the dead. Full Story »

The article presents a montage of the current blitz of Gaza. The story seems to suggest the attacks are retaliation, with unspoken implications that the attacks from the two sides are proportionate rather than disproportionate.

There is no mention of the inept bush intervention to pretend to be working for a peace process.

Vivid series of updates on the new Israeli assault on Gaza Strip. A bit lopsided in equating "almost daily rocket and mortar fire by Gaza militants" that "killed one Israeli and wound(ed) six" with a full-force series of air strikes on one of the most densely populated pieces of land on Earth.

This assault is a disproportionate military response to a criminal act, and a political maneuver by the Israeli government as part of a pre-election campaign and a long-standing intent to remove Palestinians from Gaza. The Geneva Conventions prohibit collective punishment for the acts of others, yet in Gaza, the Israeli government has imprisoned 1.5 million Palestinians, deprived them of electricity, fuel, water, food, cooking oil, flour for bread, medications, medical treatment, ... This is a good "who-what-when-where" story of the catastrophic Israeli attacks upon Gaza but context is missing - there's little here about Israel's ongoing blockade of most supplies, including food and medical supplies, entering Gaza. The story also hews to the naming conventions favoring the Israeli viewpoint. For example, the "security compounds" in "Hamas ruled territory" could be termed police stations, and the "security men" could be termed policemen, who are themselves civilians. The U.S. response is typically unconscionable - it condemns (properly) Hamas' rocket attacks, but it merely urges Israel to be careful to avoid civilian casualties. There is no indication here of the monstrous disproportionality of Israel's response.

As an American Jew, the actions of Isreal appall me.

Quality journalism provides information, and this story covers what is happening.

My personal view is that Israel is imitating the USA in performing outright acts of murder such as we have done in Iraq and Afghanistan.

That is the way it is in the Middle East. The Palistinian people shouldn't have to suffer this way.

You have to ask yourself why the "Hamas leaders are willing to fight to the last drop of blood of their own people". I doubt if you could find almost anyone that would disagree with the fact that if they stopped rocketing Israel and sending suicide bombers, there would never be another attack by Israel. So why don't they just stop. A month after the rockets and suicide bombers stopped, Israel would start to edge towards normal relations and if the peace held, within 6 months ... More »

Good report on Israel's attack on Gaza, killing hundreds of Palestinians as punishment for the deaths of one or two Israelis. More of the "eye for an eyelash" that is so characteristic of Israeli responses. Gordon Johndroe, neocon spokesman for the national security council, called Hamas "thugs" - - par for the course.

Israel smashed Lebanon and killed more than 1200 civilians, in an insane "reponse" to a minor skirmish carried out by Hezbollah. Hundreds of millions of people are around the planet are becoming haters of Israel because of its sustained oppression of the Palestinians. Israeli stupidity is encouraged and facilitated by the US.

It covers all sides fairly. It even call those launching rockets into Israel terrorists.

Hamas always knew that Israel could launch any level of attack it chose if they kept firing rockets. The way for Hamas to avoid a disproportionate response was to avoid attacks on Israel. Hamas will stop fighting when sustaining losses becomes intolerable. Until that time the response from Israel will actually be less than proportionate. If Hamas wants to get goods through Israel it will have to stop sending suicide bombers in the other direction. In the mean time let Egypt supply ... More »

It's horrific what is going on in Gaza. The Israeli government is waging a war on a people who are armed with stones and homemade rockets. The use of extreme force will only make matters worse.
