Alleged Madoff Scheme Closes Doors

On Tuesday, about three dozen of the biggest Jewish foundations in the country convened an emergency meeting to come up with a plan to anonymously help the Jewish nonprofits that fell victim to a $50 billion Ponzi scheme that Wall Street trader Bernard L. This article is a bit sappy, but that's not to say the event isn't newsworthy. Opening with the Maimonides quote, while interesting, did nothing to move the story along. My first thought was that I was reading a column that had been mislabeled as news. The story is otherwise decent, but spends too much time capturing the emotion of the meeting and not enough on giving us the big picture.

I question whether this story would have been run in its current form if it weren't the holidays. I enjoy the season as much as anyone, but there's no reason to make intellectual concessions.

A big failure of this article is in not giving us a sense of the scale of the impact on Jewish charities. While losses are listed, we aren't told what percent of their total holdings/endowments the losses represent.
