This excellent article considers both sides of the issue. When writing a film script, if the end compliments the beginning, it's known as "bookending". This shoe incident--a simple act in itself--is the perfect historical bookend to the beginning of what was to have been a simple invasion for oil.

Having suffered through eight long years of the Bush administration’s proclivity to secrecy, imperialism, torture, and authority, one can work up considerable sympathy for this gentleman. I had youthful dreams of being a super hero. But I couldn’t leap tall buildings at a single bound; didn’t have a mask with pointy ears like a bat; and couldn’t find a great white horse named Silver. How my life would have been different if I knew all it took was a pair of #10 shoes.

Great story, capturing in considerable detail the essence of the rage felt by so many millions of Muslims against G W Bush - - who continues to spout nonsense about "victory" in Iraq when his idiocy has caused the needless violent deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in that country. The Financial Times in its editorial today called Bush a serial bungler.

Bush is an arrogant ignoramus, and indeed a serial bungler who should keep his mouth shut about any so-called "victory" in Iraq. What an idiot!

Zaidi has helped shoo bush out of Iraq. I too am enraged that bush would try to claim a victory and extract expressed gratitude from the Iraqis for an illegal immoral invasion and occupation that has killed over one million and created five million internal and external refugees.

Zaidi's brother is reporting he has suffered a broken arm, broken ribs, and internal bleeding; all denied by police. There is a move afoot to send old shoes to the White House in sympathy. I think I have none smelly enough.

I would say yes

I agree, we shouldn't have gone in. We should have just left them to kill one another like they have for years. Now that we have done the dirty work, kick Bush while he is down.
