Alterman speaks truth back against the distortions put forward by the big corporate right white media. On every major issue, Americans favor a progressive/liberal position.

The success of the "center-right" meme is a construct from the mean steam media. The victories of right wing candidates is largely due to the fact they gather enough money in to buy elections. There is great potential for a more democratic government if publicly financed elections were instituted, so the progressive ideas of this great country could get a fair hearing and successful candidates.

Despite what the title indicates, Eric Alterman does little to make a compelling case that the United States is or isn't "center-right" and instead spends most of his time in a frustrated meditation on the term "liberal."

This is an example of why I canceled my subscription to the Nation back in April. The magazine's political coverage and commentary became more and more inane as the election heated up, and it's a pity to see that the momentum for lame, mainline liberal punditry is still strong.
